Ministry To Upgrade AKTH Infrastructure

The Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole has pledged to rehabilitate Infrastructural facilities, especially road network in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital(AKTH), Kano. The Minister made this pledge while on a working visit to the Hospital.
In his speech, Professor Adewole said AKTH deserved more government support considering the specialized healthcare services offered at the hospital as regards Kidney transplant, General Renal care, Vascular and Endoscopic Surgery and the enormous healthcare needs sought at the Accident and Emergency unit of the 700 bedded facility by patients in Kano and its environs.
The Minister urged the Chief Medical Director(CMD), AKTH, Professor Aminu Zakari Mohammed to stop operating the hospital as a General hospital. “You must stop operating this hospital as a general Hospital, It is a Referral Center, let the world know what you are doing here in terms of Renal dialysis, so Publicize your services. This is the right way to check Medical tourism.”
The Minister also said that funds would soon be released to the hospital to assist in offsetting the payment of her outsourced services. He however advised on the need to centralize Revenue collection in the hospital to ensure effective management and accountability.
Speaking earlier, the CMD informed that the hospital, equipped with the highest number of Dialysis Machines, with some dedicated to HIV and Hepatitis care, had successfully carried out 40 Kidney transplant since 2002.
Professor Mohammed however listed some challenges faced by the Hospital to include: Declining budgetary allocation, Staff shortage and uncompleted Capital projects amongst others. He commended the Minister for his good leadership and support for the Hospital.
